【Jazz Signature: Samuel Chan Trio - Tribute to Great Jazz Drummers】

The Collective School of Music

When Hong Kong’s own Samuel Chan sits behind the drum kit, rhythm becomes both history and heartbeat. Having studied under jazz luminaries from Hong Kong to New York, Chan embodies the spirit of a global jazz lineage. His latest live project pays homage to the titans who shaped modern drumming — a night dedicated to exploring the groove, fire, and innovation of the legends who defined swing, bebop, and beyond.

Chan will be joined by two outstanding collaborators: bassist Nelson Fung,  and Japanese saxophonist Yu Hagiwara. Together, the trio promises a journey through decades of jazz evolution, using rhythm as both tribute and transformation.

The program reads like a who’s who of drumming icons. From the exuberant swing of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” inspired by Baby Dodds, to the exotic pulses of “Caravan” in the tradition of Jo Jones, the concert celebrates the percussive pioneers who broke rhythmic ground. The trio will also explore Elvin Jones’s polyrhythmic power and Tony Williams’s youthful ferocity, also with Paul Motian’s poetic minimalism.

For Samuel, this concert isn’t merely an exercise in emulation — it’s a tribute fueled by gratitude and deep respect. Having refined his craft under Peter Retzlaff, Chris Coleman, and Kendrick Scott at New York’s The Collective School of Music, and shared the stage with artists like Theo Hill and Barry Finnerty, he brings both pedigree and personality to every beat.

Expect a night of swing, fire, and imagination.
