From the ancient melodies of Chaozhou to the jazz clubs of Rotterdam, Mandy Chan’s voice is a passport to musical worlds unseen. This polyglot vocalist—fluent in seven languages and as many genres—has spent a decade dissolving boundaries between East and West, tradition and innovation.
Her credentials read like a conservatory’s honor roll: a Xinghai Conservatory bachelor’s (with distinction), a Codarts jazz master’s, and a 2014 Chinese Jazz New Forces Award. Yet it’s her artistic alchemy that truly dazzles. Whether interpreting Portuguese fado at Avignon’s 2024 Off Festival or premiering original fusion works at India’s G20 summit with the Sur Vasudha Orchestra, Chan treats every stage as a cross-cultural laboratory.
Listen closely to her 2021 EP Songs of China, where guzheng trembles against walking basslines, or anticipate her 2024 city-pop collaboration City Lights with Hong Kong producer David Tong. Critics hail her sound as "where Peking opera meets Ella Fitzgerald"—a description that barely captures her genre-defying range.
In an era of world music, Chan’s work proposes a radical idea: that a Chaozhou folk tune can swing, that a jazz standard can breathe new life in Mandarin. Let's look forward to her performance on May 24th!
